ALHE4060 Research In Allied Health - Journal Article Review Form
This assignment gives your first experience of reading and reacting to journal literature in Allied Health Research. Many
students never realize there's a world beyond the textbooks and so it's all new to them. You learn that in your specialty
there are things printed every day that are new. You will have to keep up to maintain your professional competency. Journals
are a resource that you can use, both here in school and when you get out in a professional situation. The assignment is carefully
sequenced with clear due dates and instructions.
I believe that all of you, as future health care professionals, should be aware of how you can keep up on new developments
in allied health and the issues that surround them. Therefore, the objectives of this assignment are to familiarize you with
the available literature in medicine and allied health.
To meet the objectives of the assignment, you will:
· Read and study, in detail, one current article on a topic covered in class from any of the three journals mentioned above.
· You will submit two assigned journal articles as Discussion Forums,
and you may submit 2 or more of your own for credit in ALHE4060. Ask the instructor if you wish to submit more than 2.
Details of What You Need To Do:
1. Go to the library and check out the issues of the journal. You can also use the Internet for a resource.
2. TIP: Most Journals publish a subject index in their December issue. This is extremely useful and convenient when performing
searches on subjects.
3. Look through the selected article ass well as the rest of that issue of the journal and several other recent issues
to get a clear understanding of:
4. what kinds of information is published,
5. what audience it is intended to serve
6. Whether references for further information are given.
7. Complete the Journal Article Review Form and submit by the due date.
To receive full credit for this assignment, you must answer all questions on the review form and submit it by the due date.
Here is the information you should submit to your Research website:
Title of Journal
Article Congenital lobar emphysema and sequestration--treatment by embolization
Title of Journal
Pediatric Surgery International
Volume___________3___________________ Date ___9___/__NA___/___2005___ Page Number(s) _____727_________
· What organization is responsible for publishing the journal you chose?
PEDIATRIC SURGERY INTERNATIONAL
· What is your overall evaluation of this article?
_____Poor ______Fair ______Good ____X___Very Good _____Excellent
· Why did you choose to review this particular article?
I have a very keen interest in respiratory, which I will also be enrolling in the fall of 2008. Also, this article really
hit home with me because as a newborn I suffered from this disease. In my case, the whole lung was affected and not just a
particular lobe of the lung. This resulted in a whole pneumonectomy of my left lung just a couple days after birth. When researching
a journal article for this class, I tried to find articles relating to this particular topic because it is not a common health
issue. The reason for picking this article was more personal than just academic, and I also wanted to increase my own knowledge
on the subject.
· How would you rate this article as a tool for teaching a student about
cardiopulmonary physiology, radiography, or another allied health specialty?
Students: ____Poor ____Fair _____Good _____Very Good __X___Excellent
Teachers: ____Poor ____Fair _____Good _____Very Good __X___Excellent
Patients: ____Poor ____Fair ___X__Good _____Very Good _____Excellent
· Comment on the readability of this article.
This article on congenital lobar emphysema has a very good readability value. Although some people that are
not educated in Anatomy/Physiology may have trouble understanding what is being discussed. A student that is an Allied Health
professional will be able to read this article with ease, such as a Cardiopulmonary major. I was able to understand most of
this article quite easily, due to my own knowledge of anatomy and physiology. The case report serves as an example so that
the reader may be able to understand why congenital lobar emphysema is so terrible. The article also uses statistics and diagrams
that help to increase one's knowledge on the topic.
· Course Topics covered:
The course topics covered in this article are:
Congenital lobar emphysema
Sequestration
Lobectomies and Pneumonectomies
Embolization
A case study involving congenital lobar emphysema with sequestration
Statistics and examples of X-rays
Alternate treatment methods to pneumonectomies
This article is definently useful for any person that is studying the respiratory system of the human body,
and it serves as an example for such rare cases that are not very common in the general population.
· Brief Summary:
This article deals with infants diagnosed with congenital lobar emphysema associated with sequestration,
and the alternate treatment methods that can be taken to preserve lives. The disease is characterized by respiratory distress
and hyperinflation of the lobes. It has been explained that this disease can be associated with pathological-like sequestration
of the upper and lower lobes of the lung. Normally a lobectomy can be performed to help the infant regain normal physiological
functions, but this article describe what measures can be taken to avoid a total pneumonectomy. An important note about congenital
lobar emphysema is that it affects a ratio of 1:25,000 or .004% of live births in the United States. This is an extremely
low number of all live births, and the case is rarely seen. The article that discusses this complication is an important message
for those who are familiar with the respiratory system, and is more or less an interesting topic relating to emphysema. In
this particular case with the infant, there was an artery that was supplying blood flow from the abdominal area to the lower
lobe of the lung. This did not allow the lobe to inflate, therefore causing complications. An embolization technique was then
used to stop the blood flow and reinflate the lobe to fill the hemithorax. This article is useful in how it describes what
methods should be taken before performing a pneumonectomy, and making sure that is the last route. Such steps include echocardiographic
evaluation, hemodynamic evaluation before surgery, and a method to avoid complete resectional surgery of the lung.
· Identify and attempt to explain three (3) terms, procedures
or concepts that were unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.
While reading this article three procedures were somewhat unfamiliar to me:
1. The embolization process is somewhat unfamiliar to me because I have not actually studied congenital lobar
emphysema and the treatments associated with it.
2. There is a tool/item used to embolize the artery on the infant in the case study. This tool was called
an Amplatzer PDA plug that was used in London on the infant. This surgical item was unfamiliar to me, and I assumed it was
used for some sort of arterial repair.
3. Considering my lack of knowledge in the respiratory field, I am unfamiliar with certain diagnosing techniques
and methods used to treat patients. Some of these may include hemodynamic evaluation, echocardiographic evaluation (monitoring
of the heart), the types of surgeries that can be done to preserve life, and the extremely detailed anatomy (for example the
use of the 6th arch of the aorta). Yet, this article whether not everything is understood the message is quite clear.
· Detail the strengths/weaknesses of this article.
The article has many more strengths than it does weaknesses. For example, it is strong in how it deals with
a rare case relating to the cardiopulmonary system. It also tries to explain certain procedures using examples such as images
and statistical data. Considering the lack of knowledge about rare diseases that affect the cardiopulmonary system, this article
hits home with the idea that it should be made an example to all health professionals. Also, this article is more personal
too, because of my own history with congenital lobar emphysema at birth, which resulted in a complete pneumonectomy.
The weakness of the articleas only one issue. This issue included the fact that this is not meant for people
that do not understand the body. It is much more complex than everyday reading material, because it deals with complex issues
of anatomy and physiology. It is the only weakness that is portrayed, but it is very useful for those that do understand the
disease.
· How might this article be useful to you in your further
studies and career?
This article is useful to me in several different ways. First, it is more personal because I have been through
this rare disease at birth. I also want to know more about the disease, and I am interested in the cardiopulmonary functions
of the body. Also, I will be experiencing and learning about the respiratory system in the fall and I want to be able to understand
everything that is being talked about. In the future I may run into a case that involves congenital lobar emphysema with sequestration,
and I can refer back to this article for treatment methods (embolization of the artery supplying the lobe). Considering the
chances of seeing this disease as mentioned, is .004%, and I may never see it but have only experienced it to a certain degree.
This article will be useful now and in the future to help me fully understand the functions of the cardopulmonary systems.
· Does the article include a list of references/citations
that can be used to find more information on the topics they cover?
This article lists eight references that have been used for this particular topic. Also, they can be used
for future reference regarding congenital lobar emphysema with seqestration. The references may also refer to other types
of diseases and treatments available for anyone who is interested.
